Have you noticed your heart racing every time your phone buzzes with a notification? Last week, I caught myself ordering a latte at Starbucks while simultaneously checking my email and mentally running through my dinner shopping list. That’s when it hit me. I used to proudly call myself the queen of multitasking, but the truth is, I wasn’t really experiencing any of it.

Here in America, mindfulness has moved beyond being just a trend—it’s becoming a way of life. Companies like Google and Nike have incorporated it into their employee training programs, and mindfulness classes at my local community center are packed. But I know many of you are still wondering, “What exactly is mindfulness?” Today, I want to dive deep into this practice of “returning to the here and now.”

What Is Mindfulness?

If I had to define mindfulness in one sentence, it would be this: paying attention to the present moment, without judgment. It’s about being fully present with what’s happening right now, rather than dwelling on past regrets or future anxieties.

While mindfulness has its roots in Buddhist meditation practices, it was Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn who brought it into mainstream American culture in the 1970s when he introduced it as a medical program at the University of Massachusetts. He stripped away the religious elements and presented it as a scientific approach, which helped it spread across the country. Today, mental health professionals, doctors, and therapists across various fields recommend it.

What drew me to mindfulness was its accessibility. You don’t need any special equipment or locations—no yoga mat, no incense, no mountain retreat. You can practice it in your car during your commute, at your desk during lunch, or on your couch after putting the kids to bed.

Why Modern Life Needs “Awareness”

In our lives—especially within America’s “always on the move” culture—it’s far too easy to live on autopilot mode.

Think about it:

Checking your phone the moment you wake up

Eating dinner while watching Netflix

Planning your next to-do list while listening to a podcast during your drive

Scrolling through Instagram in bed before sleep

According to the American Psychological Association, we spend about 47% of our waking hours “thinking about something other than what we’re doing.” That means we’re not actually experiencing nearly half of our lives!

This “lack of awareness” creates several problems:

Chronic stress: Our brains never rest because we’re always thinking about the next task

Shallow relationships: We’re physically present with our partners and family, but mentally absent

Burnout: A side effect of America’s “hustle culture”

Poor eating habits: We eat without awareness, and suddenly the entire bag of chips is gone

I used to end my days thinking, “Wait, what did I even do today?” Time would just pass without any real sense of fulfillment. Just as gym training builds physical muscles, meditation is an exercise that strengthens the mental muscle—our ability to direct attention.

The Role of Meditation

Meditation is the “training ground” for mindfulness. By sitting in a quiet environment and practicing focusing your attention on your breath or bodily sensations, you develop the ability to use that skill in everyday life.

My yoga studio instructor once said, “Meditation is like push-ups for your mind.” At first, even sitting for five minutes feels challenging, but it gets easier with practice.

The Role of Yoga

Yoga is also a wonderful tool as moving meditation. Yoga studios are everywhere in America, and more of my friends are choosing yoga over SoulCycle these days.

In yoga, you focus on your breath and bodily sensations while holding each pose. When your arms are shaking in Down Dog, you observe that sensation without judgment. That’s mindfulness in action.

However, chasing Instagram-worthy yoga poses is different from mindfulness. What matters isn’t how it looks, but noticing what’s happening inside you in that moment.

The Difference Between General Meditation and Mindfulness Meditation

This is where things get confusing! That’s interesting. Let me return to my breath”

When I first tried meditation, my mental chatter wouldn’t stop and I thought, “I’m just not cut out for this!” But with mindfulness meditation, simply noticing that “non-stop chatter” is the success. The goal isn’t achieving silence—it’s becoming aware of your current state.

This is the complete opposite of America’s “results-oriented” and “achievement-driven” culture, which might feel strange at first. This is a true game-changer.

What Is the Power of Observation?

Imagine you’re sitting in a movie theater, and your life is playing on the screen. You’re in the audience, watching that movie. This is the “observer’s perspective.”

With mindfulness practice, you begin to notice things like:

“Oh, I’m feeling angry right now” (rather than being consumed by anger)

“Anxious thoughts are spinning in my head” (rather than becoming the anxiety itself)

“I want to eat even though I’m not hungry” (rather than impulsively eating)

Real-Life Changes

In my experience, as this power of observation develops, daily life transforms in these ways:

At Work Before: Critical email from boss → Immediately defensive reply → Regret Now: Critical email from boss → Notice “my heart is pounding” and “my face feels hot” → Take a deep breath → Reply once I’ve calmed down

In Relationships Before: Partner’s casual comment → Feel hurt → Prickly attitude → Fight Now: Partner’s comment → Notice “I’m feeling hurt right now” → “That comment hurt my feelings” → Constructive conversation

With Myself Before: Failure → Storm of self-criticism → Depression → More self-loathing Now: Failure → Notice “I’m really beating myself up right now” → “Everyone makes mistakes” → Self-compassion

Creating Space

The greatest gift of observation is creating “space” between stimulus and response.

As psychologist Viktor Frankl famously said: “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

Mindfulness expands that space. When I walk past a Krispy Kreme (my weakness!), there’s now a moment between the “I want it!” impulse and actually walking into the store. In that moment, I can ask myself, “Am I really hungry?” or “Didn’t I already have two donuts today?”

Consistent Practice Is Key

To be honest, this power of observation doesn’t develop overnight. I’ve been practicing for three years, and I still react impulsively sometimes.

But what I can say with certainty is that the more you practice, the more those “moments of awareness” increase. And each one of those moments makes life more conscious and more fulfilling.

Conclusion

Mindfulness doesn’t require special talent or enormous amounts of time.
